Humidor Cigar Boxes

Little Cigars

By: Daniel Beckitt

Humidor cigar boxes are designed to store cigars within an optimal humidity range of 68% to 72%. This level of humid will be reached while the humidor is at room temperature. A humidor must contain a humidification system or device to add (or remove) moisture from its interior space to maintain the desired humidity. A humidor cigar box usually contains a hygrometer to measure the humidity level inside the box. Most humidor cigar boxes are made of wood, with the inside usually constructed with Spanish cedar.

Types of humidor cigar boxes include:

Table humidor – these humidors are generally very heavy. Although they are ( in theory) portable, they are usually kept in one place. Could hold anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand (or more) cigars.

Room humidor – this type is quite common in places like cigar stores or bars. An entire room will be converted to become a humidor storing all cigars.

Travel humidor – a portable solution which is commonly used for carrying enough cigars enough an outing / event. Can often store between 10 and 50 cigars.

Personal humidor – casual cigar smokers may keep a smaller humidor at home for special occasions, or simply for the look and feel. These humidors have similar characteristics to travel humidors, but can contain a bigger number of cigars (75+).

Seasoning your humidor cigar box

After purchase (or being dry for an extended period) your humidor needs to be seasoned. To begin, wipe down the interior with a moist cloth to remove all dust. Some experts suggest that wiping the interior cedar of your humidor with water is not the best practice, but many people still do it to try and season their humidor more quickly. After this, leave a small container in the humidor and close the lid for approximately 12 hours. If you find that most (or all) of the water has been absorbed, repeat this process for a further 24 hours. Once the water has stopped evaporating, you can start storing your cigars in the humidor. The humidifying element will keep the wood moist, which then keeps the cigars moist. Using distilled water is recommended as it contains far fewer minerals, additives, or bacteria than tap or bottled water.

Once you have finished seasoning your humidor and the box is dry to the touch, your humidor cigar box is now ready for use. Enjoy!
